How important is world building to you as a fantasy reader?

History, myths and legends, how landscapes have changed, weather patterns and their effects on the cultures in books are some of the essential aspects of solid world building that helps to deepen the immersive quality of a fantasy book series. As a fine artist as well as a fantasy author, it is such a pleasure to be able to bring my characters and world to life visually. I have sculpted, drawn and painted them into existence every bit as much as the words on the page. It is one of my favourite things about creating books.

Illustrated novels are not very common but it adds so much layered richness to the experience of reading!

Question: How do you separate art creation and writing?

Answer: I don’t!

For me as a creator, the two are inextricably linked, and the universe I’m building requires immersion in both. The characters, the landscapes, the myths and history are all cross-pollinated and enriched with both. As words tumble onto the page, so too do the visions and scenes manifest as drawings, paintings and sculpture.

When I began writing these books, I never imagined what an incredible journey it would become creatively, and to this day, it is still growing. There is so much work still ahead to see these books created in the format and with the quality I envision, but it is my bliss and my joy, and I look forward to sharing it with you in all of its creative iterations.

I will be totally honest… this painting took me a long time and there are still details and work I want to do in the background and the characters faces. But something amazing happened when I was painting it—a sense of the essence and truth of these two people came to life under my brush strokes. The painting is large and the characters are almost life-sized, making them feel like they live epically in our own world.

New illustration of Pellaris underway… I think this will be a two page spread in Book Two! I haven’t done a drawing of Pellar’s capital from a distance like this yet, only sections or details. I plan to also do some interior illustrations of the keep and some street scenes.✨

I will be hard at work getting the drawings done for the book over the summer while the manuscript is with the publisher for formatting and a professional copy edit. Then on to printing in late 2026 or early 2027 depending on timing for everything.

Drawing, writing, and building the immersive fantasy world of The Stone Guardians...

The successful launch of Book One was a huge milestone for me, but Book Two feels like the richness and depth of the series is being allowed to breath, as if the wind is filling out the ship's sail to let these characters, and the world they inhabit, fully loose into ours!

With Book One now available in multiple formats, we are gearing up for the launch of the Custom hardcover of Book Two on Kickstarter.

Drawing, writing, and building the immersive fantasy world of The Stone Guardians...

The successful launch of Book One was a huge milestone for me, but Book Two feels like the richness and depth of the series is being allowed to breath, as if the wind is filling out the ship's sail to let these characters, and the world they inhabit, fully loose into ours!

With Book One now available in multiple formats, we are gearing up for the launch of the Custom hardcover of Book Two on Kickstarter.

Make sure to join me on The Kickstarter pre-launch page for updates on when our campaign launches in late June.

Only a week away!!! Come see me at @southokanaganrenaissancefair next Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm in Gyro Park Penticton.

I will have Book One my illustrated fantasy book series, prints, postcard and even a few original paintings and bronze sculptures! I will be live sculpting during the day so be sure to come by to say hello. The farmers market will be right next to the park so there will be lots to see and do.

Hardcovers and softcovers of Book One: The Messenger From Myris Dar are available at @frogcitycafe along with some of my paintings. This beautiful cafe houses a selection of artwork from local artists curated and managed by @auroramathesonfineartgallery. We will be hosting a Book Two launch event here in July during the live Kickstarter campaign with pre-orders for the second book available through the campaign… all backers will get their names publish in the acknowledgements of the book!
