One of my favourite parts of documenting the artwork that goes into the books is creating flat lay compositions. Join me in the studio for this latest photo shoot.

The works featured in the video are concept sketches and character studies, the original painting that is featured on the cover of Book Two: Keeper’s Burden, and works in progress for a few of the illustrations that will go into Book Two and Three.

There’s even a small bronze sculpture. Can you spot Arynilas?

Coming up for some air... it has been an intense few days. Whew!
I am happy to share that the #kickstarter campaign for Book Two of the Stone Guardians is now 90% of the way toward its funding goal! Yay!
My heartfelt thanks to past backers and new alike who are helping me bring this project to life. There are still a few hours to get in on the early discounts for the signed hardcovers, and Keeper's Box bundle.
Our campaign for Book Two is modest, yet once funded it will go a long way to helping me pay for the custom hardcover print run of Book Two. As an artist as well as an author, it is so gratifying to see the books in my series getting produced in a high-quality format with so many illustrations throughout. I absolutely love what I do. As a relatively established fine artist, it is a little daunting and a challenge to be starting from scratch as an indie author. But ultimately it is worth it because this illustrated fantasy novel series doesn't just consist of books. That is only one aspect of it, what I am creating is an entire body of work grounded in this world, its characters and story.

How important is world building to you as a fantasy reader?

History, myths and legends, how landscapes have changed, weather patterns and their effects on the cultures in books are some of the essential aspects of solid world building that helps to deepen the immersive quality of a fantasy book series. As a fine artist as well as a fantasy author, it is such a pleasure to be able to bring my characters and world to life visually. I have sculpted, drawn and painted them into existence every bit as much as the words on the page. It is one of my favourite things about creating books.

Illustrated novels are not very common but it adds so much layered richness to the experience of reading!

Question: How do you separate art creation and writing?

Answer: I don’t!

For me as a creator, the two are inextricably linked, and the universe I’m building requires immersion in both. The characters, the landscapes, the myths and history are all cross-pollinated and enriched with both. As words tumble onto the page, so too do the visions and scenes manifest as drawings, paintings and sculpture.

When I began writing these books, I never imagined what an incredible journey it would become creatively, and to this day, it is still growing. There is so much work still ahead to see these books created in the format and with the quality I envision, but it is my bliss and my joy, and I look forward to sharing it with you in all of its creative iterations.

I will be totally honest… this painting took me a long time and there are still details and work I want to do in the background and the characters faces. But something amazing happened when I was painting it—a sense of the essence and truth of these two people came to life under my brush strokes. The painting is large and the characters are almost life-sized, making them feel like they live epically in our own world.
