Book Three, A Light in the Dark

Moonlight lit the crests of the dunes and cast long shadows through the eerie landscape. Ilyason directed Tolak and the Hounds to shift course, leading them up to the crest of one of the great dunes and along its serpentine ridge. The horses flagged further, struggling through the deep sand, their sides heaving as they bore their armored riders.

The rocking rhythm of the saddle lulled him into a trance, and his mind freed itself to float above and beyond. Both moons had risen and the stars in the sky were extraordinarily bright. He had never seen their like.

Ilyason moved outward, speeding across the dunes toward the remnants of his trap and the portal spells. Mountains of sand passed beneath him, and he was astonished by the vastness of this desert waste. He spotted something in the distance and moved toward it. A line of dark creatures appeared in a long flat valley between gigantic dunes. As Ilyason drifted closer he realized they were Black Beasts. They moved through the landscape with effortless grace, their long limbs covering the ground in great strides.

And there, in the midst of the beasts, walked the Guardian woman.
