New Maps for The Messenger From Myris Dar,

The soon to be completed second edition of
The Messenger From Myris Dar now has new maps!
I have been wanting to rework the map for my illustrated fantasy novel series for quite some time. The original map had a few inconsistencies which did not match descriptions in the book––and as with many of these types of maps––scale issues.
In order to draw in all of the landscapes and places with their respective names, the map ends up with a smaller scale of distance between locations.
To manage this, and to give the island of Myris Dar enough of its own space, I have created two separate maps that will span a two-page spread in the book.

Working on the toned-grey paper…
The original map was also completed on white paper, which differers from all of the other illustrations in the books. To maintain consistency, I wanted to recreate the new versions on the same grey paper. This paper is beautiful. A Strathmore Mixed Media sheet that is delightful to work on with white pencil crayons to add highlights, and greater depth to the drawings.
Foregoing the decorative border…
Sadly, in order to maximize space for the map itself, I have decided to leave out the decorative boarder from the first edition map. Although perhaps I will be able to feature it elsewhere in the books.
Ultimately, the functionality of the map, and its ability to help readers visualize the world I have created, is more important than the decorative border that enhanced it.
